This is a weird little book. In a good way. Pat Black doesn't so much tell us stories as he gives us glimpses of people's lives, glimpses that read very true, of people that might well be real. In a very economic way, Black sketches emotionally intense situations, throwing the reader directly into the middle of the story without explaining how we got there. Sometimes it's a bit confusing, and I found myself re-reading the first one or two paragraphs of some of the stories before settling in. Many feel too short, not because they read unfinished, but because the author manages to create a bond between the reader and the characters very quickly, and I wanted to read on, find out where they're going from here and what happens next. At least two-thirds of the stories have the potential to be developed into something much, much bigger. Anyway, it's definitely worth a read, and I'm looking forward to more by this author.Product details
